About Inuit Qaujisarvingat
Inuit Qaujisarvingat: The Inuit Knowledge Centre envisions a world where Inuit and Inuit knowledge contribute to the advancement of sustainable Arctic science and policy. Inuit Qaujisarvingat will lead education and training efforts to ensure an increasingly active role for Inuit that leads to the generation of innovative knowledge for improved research and policy making within a Canadian and global context.
Why are we being formed?
Issues of sovereignty, resource development, climate change and militarization have attracted surging interest in the Arctic, creating increasing demands for data. Yet, there remain significant challenges in expanding the research base to incorporate Inuit knowledge. This omission has the potential to exclude Inuit from key policy areas affecting our lives and homeland.
Each body of knowledge — western science and Inuit knowledge — contributes to answering specific questions and supporting specific hypotheses. Inuit Qaujisarvingat will seek to encourage dialogue and discourse to improve understanding among experts in both western science and Inuit knowledge and produce innovative contributions to sound Arctic research. Sound Arctic research must seek the best available knowledge, which includes government, academic, the private sector and Inuit knowledge. Sound Arctic research provides a strong foundation from which strong Arctic policy can be built.
Who are our audiences?
Inuit Qaujisarvingat will support those involved in Arctic and Inuit research and policy development from community to international levels. This is a diverse group of audiences, including Inuit organizations, researchers and policy makers, governments, and Arctic research networks.
How will we contribute to Canada?
Inuit Qaujisarvingat will help Canada in building on its inherent advantages as a steward of remarkable human and natural resources of crucial global importance. It will help Canada fulfill its international obligations and become a leader in the exchange and use of Inuit and scientific knowledge.
